Foundation Trust Project - Laying the foundation for a brighter future
University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust aims to provide excellent patient care through learning and discovery, and to be the best choice for people in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond.
We have started this journey by introducing a programme of improvements which will give our patients the highest standards of quality care. Our staff will benefit from the satisfaction of providing that care. We have already:
- Achieved a rating from patients regarding experience of care at the Trust that is among the best in the country (National Inpatient Survey)
- Achieved a 40% reduction in MRSA and a 50% reduction in Clostridium difficile infections in 2008/09
- Achieved and improved our performance against the three key targets for cancer patients for the second successive year
- Been ranked as one of the top 25% of Trusts for maternity services in 2007 with a rating of ‘Best Performing’
The Trust, which manages University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, is proposing to become an NHS Foundation Trust. We believe that this is the best way for us to fulfil our exciting plans for the hospital, our patients and our staff. We also believe it is the best way for many people with an interest in health services to become involved in influencing them.
Consultation
As part of the process of becoming an NHS Foundation Trust we undertook a 12 week public consultation, seeking the views of our patients, staff and the people of Coventry and Warwickshire and beyond. You gave us your views on our plans for the future and on how the new Foundation Trust could be run and we would like to thank everyone who took the time to give us their feedback or become a member of the Trust. Your contribution is much appreciated.
We had valuable input from patients, carers, staff, partners and members of the public about our plans and ideas and have assessed the data and feedback. We would like to share our findings with you. To read the full consultation report, click here.
As an NHS Foundation Trust our patients, staff and members of the public can become 'members' of the Trust and while the consultation is now closed, you can still sign up as a member at any time. This means you can be involved in shaping the future of your healthcare services. We hope you would take up this opportunity to apply for membership. Just visit the Membership page to fill out and submit your form online.
Foundation Trust timetable
We are pleased and proud to have successfully completed the consultation stage of our application but UHCW NHS Trust’s journey is by no means over. Please see below for the next steps and provisional timetable of our bid to become a Foundation Trust:
End of Consultation - December 2009
(Remaining timetable is subject to change)
Request to Secretary of State - Late 2011/Early 2012
Secretary of State Decision - 2012
Monitor authorisation process – 2012
Earliest date of Authorisation - 2012
Over half of all provider trusts in England are already NHS Foundation Trusts and the Government expects all NHS healthcare providers to become NHS Foundation Trusts by April 2013. The status of NHS Trust (non Foundation Trust) will be removed from statute in 2013/14, so if the Trust does not become an NHS Foundation Trust it will not be in a strong position to maintain and develop its services. That would not benefit our patients, staff or partners.
We think this is a wonderful opportunity for local people and health services. We hope you will agree.
