UHCW NHS Trust shortlisted for three top communications awards

16:00 16/03/2017

A hospital team have been shortlisted for three prestigious industry awards.

The Communications Team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust have been shortlisted for the AHCM Awards for their innovative approach earlier this year to make the public aware of pressures the Emergency Department were under.

A video which featured the Trust’s Chief Medical Officer appealing to the public not to use the Emergency Department as it was exceptionally busy was published on Facebook in January. It received over 71,000 views and reached over 148,000 people. This work was shortlisted in the ‘Best Issues Management’ category.

The small team are also shortlisted for the Trust’s new intranet, which enables the organisation’s 8,600 staff to access information they need quickly, in the ‘Internal Communications’ category.

Communications Officer Tom Phelan, who only joined the team in 2014, is also up for an award. The ‘Rising Star’ award recognises outstanding Communications Professionals under the age of 30.

Tom has been shortlisted for his work on the new intranet, as well as the results he’s achieved to increase followers on, and engagement with, the Trust’s social media channels. It’s the second time that Tom has been personally shortlisted for a national award.

The AHCM (Association of Healthcare Communications and Marketing) is the primary independent network for people working in communications and public engagement for the NHS.

Karen Martin, Chief Workforce and Information Officer, said:
“I’m really proud of the Communications Team for being shortlisted for these national awards.

“Keeping up-to-date with new technology and the social media channels that people use most is really important to help us improve the ways we communicate with our staff and our patients.

“It’s also really exciting to see Tom being shortlisted for a second national award.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Rugby on Thursday, March 16, 2017.
