London Marathon, here we come!

17:00 18/04/2017

An eager group of physiotherapists from University Physiotherapists volunteering for London MarathonHospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust will be volunteering their time and skills as part of the London Marathon’s official medical team on Sunday, April 23, 2017.

The 30 physiotherapists past and present from the hospital will be spending a long day in the capital helping runners with strains, exhaustion and giving medical advice to get them through the tough 26.2 mile course.

The UHCW volunteers will be part of a larger medical team for the marathon including doctors and nurses from nearby London Trusts and St John Ambulance.

The team will be based at the last mile of the 26.2 mile slog, so will be treating a wide variety of people with problems ranging from muscle cramps to heat exhaustion.

Sue Crewe-Smith, Senior Physiotherapist, who has been recruiting volunteers to the event for over 15 years, said: “It’s a brilliant experience for our physiotherapists to use their skills at a big event like the London Marathon. I notice the improvement in their professional and personal development following this event every year.

“I am very proud that so many of our physiotherapists have volunteered their free time to help out runners with their marathon efforts, many of whom are running for charities.
“It’s always exciting playing a supporting role in an event with such a buzz. We’re all really looking forward to it.”
