UHCW achieves international information security standard

15:00 17/07/2017

Cyber security experts at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust have achieved international accreditation.

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department at the Trust has achieved the ISO 27001:2013 accreditation, a globally recognised international standard for information security.

The standard will enhance the team’s efforts to protect the Trust against cyber security threats such as the well-publicised attack that affected a number of NHS Trust’s earlier this year. It will also enable the department to provide a more flexible and secure email service.

Mireille Wilkinson, ICT Quality and Risk Manager, said: “This accreditation is a real achievement for the Trust, and a reflection of the hard work by the project team involved attaining the standard.

“We will continue to work hard to ensure we adhere to, and maintain, the high standards of the accreditation.”

Karen Martin, Chief Workforce and Information Officer, said: “I’m so proud that our ICT Department has earned this international security standard.

“Cyber security has never been more important. The team have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes in recent months to ensure the safety and security of information and systems at UHCW, and this accreditation is very well-deserved.”

The accreditation lasts for three years, and during this time the department is required to undergo regular external audits to make sure they continue to maintain and improve their high standards.
