Plastic Surgery

The Plastic Surgery department at UHCW is led by a team of nine consultants, each with a sub-specialist interest.

We pride ourselves in delivering the best possible care to our patients whilst supporting them through their illness or injury.

Consultants are supported by senior trainees (fellows) in breast and microsurgery who have decided to spend a year of their training at UHCW to learn specialist surgical skills before they become consultants.

These posts are Royal College of Surgeons-approved positions. Click here for details.

In addition, we are supported by associate specialists in plastic surgery, trust grade registrars, training registrars, core surgical trainees, junior clinical fellows, Advanced Care Practitioners, plastic surgery specialist nurses and an administration team.

As a department working in a major trauma centre, we provide microsurgical limb reconstruction for patients who have sustained major trauma injury, working closely with our colleagues in orthopaedic surgery.

We provide reconstruction for patients having treatment for breast cancer; skin cancer, including sentinel lymph node biopsy; we deliver a full hand elective and trauma service including management of upper limb spasticity; we provide reconstruction for patients with hypospadias; a post-massive weight loss reconstruction service and manage general plastic surgery problems such as scar revision.

We support our colleagues in other surgical specialties, providing reconstruction for difficult wounds that are produced after cardio-thoracic, neurosurgical and perineal operations.

There is also an active and vibrant research interest in the department and one of our consultants is the UHCW lead for Innovation.

The department also carries out breast resconstruction surgery. For more details click here.

We see patients in clinics at University Hospital, Coventry, Hospital of St Cross in Rugby and at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, Warwick Hospital and Stratford-upon-Avon Hospital.

Our dressings clinics are run by specialist nurses who look after post-surgical wounds, minor burns and traumatic wounds.

We run 'hot clinics' where patients can be seen and treated for minor injuries by members of our team of nurses and doctors.

Major inpatient surgery is performed at University Hospital. Day case local anaesthetic and some general anaesthetic procedures are carried out at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.

We provide local anaesthetic day case surgery at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, Warwick Hospital and Stratford-upon-Avon Hospital, mostly for skin cancer and some hand conditions.

We provide a full 24-hour, seven days a week on-call service for trauma.

The on-call team can be contacted via the UHCW switchboard for all emergency enquiries and referrals.
