Respiratory

The respiratory department at UHCW includes respiratory and infectious disease specialists and provides community chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) services.
The team includes consultants and specialist nurses that work closely with other departments in the Trust including General and Acute Medicine, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Palliative Care and Intensive Care. It is also supported by junior doctors, lung cancer nurses and advanced nurse practitioners.

It is amongst the first team in the country that can conduct a wide range of complex diagnostic investigations including respiratory physiology, interventional bronchoscopy with thoracic surgery, endoscopic services and the department has a sleep laboratory. It has also been at the forefront of providing interventional respiratory services as well as ambulatory and domiciliary services and it has a pulmonary hypertension satellite clinic in collaboration with the Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Cambridge.

The department spans across several areas at University Hospital, Coventry on wards 30, 31 and 31a which treat infectious diseases, and provides outpatient clinics in Coventry and at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.

We provide care for more than half a million patients every year across Coventry, Rugby and Warwickshire and support nearby counties. Our multidisciplinary team provides treatments and run clinics for common conditions including asthma and lung cancer as well as more specialist conditions such as sarcoidosis, bronchiectasis, pulmonary hypertension and thromboembolism, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and Alpha-1 antitrypsin.

We also care for infectious respiratory conditions such as tuberculosis and long-COVID. In addition to treating long-term conditions, we work in collaboration with Birmingham Heartlands Hospital to treat asthma, we perform continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) non-invasive ventilation (NIV) treatment for sleep and ventilation disorders and we offer patients a tertiary interstitial lung disease (ILD) referral service. Our consultants also provide pulmonary rehabilitation support and respiratory physiotherapy.

We are a collaborative team of respiratory and infectious disease consultants, specialist nurses, advanced nurse practitioners and junior doctors including speciality registrars and respiratory physiologists. Our team communicates and shares learnings and best practices regularly with other colleagues across the Trust from our cancer teams, thoracic surgery and palliative care, radiology and pathology, neurology, radiology and microbiology to ensure we’re all working towards the same goal of delivering excellent patient care.

Our main wards and clinics are based at University Hospital, Coventry and we have clinics, a sleep laboratory and a sleep ventilation clinic at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

Ward 30 and 31 (Respiratory and non-invasive ventilation)

Ward 30 includes 28 patient beds and ward 31 includes 36 patient beds and is supported by nurses, junior doctors, ward clerks and ward managers. Patients staying on the wards receive regular care and input from respiratory physiologists, specialist respiratory nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists and palliative care teams. On Ward 30 we provide treatment for ward-based ventilator services for sleep apnoea, obesity hypoventilation and neuromuscular disorders.

If your GP feels you need to see a respiratory consultant, they will send a referral to us. You may also be treated by our team if you attend our hospital’s Emergency Department or another neighbouring hospital with respiratory issues.
We also conduct clinics with patients that have been discharged from our Emergency Department or Medical Decision Unit and require our ongoing support or monitoring, and we hold virtual clinics (both over the telephone and through video calls) with patients with ongoing respiratory conditions.
Our wards are based on the third floor, east wing at University Hospital Coventry and our outpatient clinics are based at both our Coventry and Rugby sites.
