Vascular Services

The department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is based at University Hospital and provides vascular services to the whole of Coventry and Warwickshire. Our team consists of six Consultant Vascular Surgeons, Vascular Nurse Specialists and Vascular Technologists.

We diagnose, investigate and treat diseases and problems affecting the circulation, including arteries, veins and lymphatic. We repair ruptured aneurysms and tears in blood vessels from major trauma, prevent stroke and salvage legs from severe diseases affecting the arteries. We also support other specialties including cardiology (transaortic valve implantation), surgical oncology (metastatic melanoma and pelvic cancers) and obstetrics for complex placentas.

We have an active research programme and run national multi-centre trials as well as our own ‘home-grown’ trials. We also train specialty trainees in vascular surgery as well as core and foundation trainees and medical students from the University of Warwick.

Conditions we treat include: Trauma, Aortic Trauma, Aortic Aneurysms, Aortic Dissection, Cerebrovascular disease, Peripheral Arterial Disease, Diabetic foot problems, deep vein thrombosis, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Bowel ischaemia, Acute limb ischaemia, Varicose veins, Leg ulcers, Lymphoedema.

We offer a full range of open and endovascular (minimally invasive) techniques for vascular diseases. We have an active complex aortic programme offering minimally invasive aortic surgery. This includes specialist multidisciplinary teams and anaesthetic techniques for spinal cord protection.

Vascular surgery operates on a ‘hub and spoke model’ with University Hospital in Coventry being the ‘hub’ and ‘Spoke’ services provided at Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton and Warwick Hospital. Arterial surgery is carried out only at University Hospital but venous surgery and clinics also occur at the other three sites.

We provide emergency care for inpatients who are admitted to the Trust. Outpatient referrals must be made through your GP.
