Neuro-Oncology Support

We are committed to providing safe, high-quality care and ensuring patients and families are listened to when concerns are raised.

The Trust has commissioned and is currently supporting an independent review by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) into the use of extended adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy in the treatment of high-grade brain tumours, including glioblastoma, and the care provided by retired neuro-oncology consultant, Ian Brown.

The Trust welcomes independent scrutiny and recognises the importance of learning from both good practice and areas where improvements may be needed.

We understand that this review may cause concern for some patients and their families. We want to reassure our community that patient safety, experience and wellbeing remain our highest priorities. The purpose of this review is to better understand the care provided, respond openly to any concerns and ensure we continue to deliver the highest standards of care.

Patients who have concerns about their treatment or care, particularly those prescribed TMZ are encouraged to contact the Trust's Patient Relations Service, who can provide support and ensure their questions and concerns are addressed appropriately.

Please contact the Family Liaison Officer by email: support.line@uhcw.nhs.uk or on 02476 968275.

We recognise that this review may also be distressing for some current and former members of staff who were involved in the delivery of care during this period.

While our focus remains on supporting patients and families, we are mindful of the impact that this process may have on healthcare professionals and others affected. Current and former staff who feel they would benefit from support or would like to discuss any concerns can access assistance through the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian by email freedomtospeakupguardian@uhcw.nhs.uk, phone 0777 575 8247 or internal extension 24506.

We encourage anyone affected by this review to seek the support they need.

UHCW is committed to being open and transparent throughout this process and will provide further updates as the review progresses and when the report becomes available.
