Digital pathology for the characterisation of biomarkers in laryngeal dysplasia:

This project seeks to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to study biopsy samples from pre-cancerous lesions in the voice box.  Specific targets will be analysed using computer programmes that will identify patterns of expression.

This will provide information on how aggressive the changes are and be able to precisely predict which cases can transform into cancers. This knowledge will help modify patient management, increase the ability to preserve speaking and swallowing functions by reducing the need for unnecessary radical treatment, give clues as to how closely and for how long patients must be supervised after treatment, guide new approaches to treatment like the development of cancer vaccines, and facilitate the prevention of cancers.

This project is being undertaken jointly by UHCW and University of Warwick with funding from the Lions Club of Coventry, Godiva.
