Bereavement Midwifery Support Service

The Bereavement Support Service at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is run by specialist midwives.

The role of the bereavement midwife is to provide immediate and long term sensitive care and support for families in Coventry and Rugby, following late fetal loss, stillbirth and neonatal death.

Based on Ward 24 at University Hospital, they are available Mon-Fri 8.00m until 4.00pm daily and can be reached on 02476 967310 or by email bereavementmidwives@uhcw.nhs.uk. You can leave a message by phone or email outside of working hours; however, if you have any physical concerns or an emergency, please contact LWT (from 20 weeks) or EPAU (before 20 weeks).

Although the role of the bereavement midwife is hospital based, they can see families at home giving help and guidance with the necessary practical requirements such as registering the death and the funeral arrangements as well as supporting families emotional needs and helping to create positive memories of their baby. They provide advice and support in subsequent pregnancies where required.

A large part of the role involves training and educating all grades of staff in best practice in bereavement care and highlighting the importance of effective and sensitive communication.
