The Bereavement Support Service at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is run by a specialist midwife.
They have been in post for 13 years, previously working as a sister on the Neonatal Unit. The midwife has a diploma in Bereavement counselling and is a memberof the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
The role of the bereavement midwife is to provide immediate and long term sensitive care and support for families in Coventry and Rugby, following late fetal loss, stillbirth and neonatal death.
Based on Ward 25 at University Hospital they currently work 3 days a week and can be reached on 024 7696 7310.
Although the role of the bereavement midwife is hospital based, they see families at home giving help and guidance with the necessary practical requirements such as registering the death and the funeral arrangements as well as supporting families emotional needs and helping to create positive memories of their baby. They provide advice and support in subsequent pregnancies where required.
A large part of the role involves training and educating all grades of staff in best practice in bereavement care and highlighting the importance of effective and sensitive communication.
