What to Expect on the Labour Ward

Facilities

  • Delivery Rooms: Modern, private rooms equipped with everything you need for labour and delivery.
  • Birthing Pools: Available for water births or as a relaxation option during labour.
  • Pain Relief Options: We offer various pain relief choices, including gas and air (Entonox), epidurals, and other methods. Speak to your midwife about what’s best for you.
  • Operating Theatres: If you require a caesarean section, our theatres are located close to the ward for quick access.

Care Team

  • You will be cared for by a team of experienced midwives and obstetricians who will support you through every stage of your labour.
  • We also have anaesthetists and neonatal team available 24/7 if additional care is needed.

Support During Labour

  • You are welcome to have your birth partner(s) with you throughout your time on the Labour Ward – at UHCW we currently allow 2 birthing partners on Labour ward. These need to remain the same 2 people throughout your labour and birth.
  • Please feel free to bring in your comforts from home, whether that be your favourite pillow or a comforter. We allow battery operated tealights also. We have a small stock of starlight projectors and you are welcome to bring in your own.
  • You will have access to a stereo player in your room which includes Bluetooth connectivity. So please feel free to make a playlist, download some podcasts or use this to support hypnobirthing.
  • Our team respects and accommodates your cultural, religious, and personal preferences whenever possible.
