Car crash survivor returns to thank UHCW teams who helped to save his life

A car crash survivor has paid an emotional visit to thank the NHS staff who saved his life and set him on the path to recovery.

Dylan returned to University Hospital, Coventry, where he was rushed after the accident in September 2022.

He was able to go back to the Critical Care and Major Trauma Enhanced Care Units that treated him for almost seven weeks.

“I remember the kind and warm nature from all of the staff,” said Dylan, 27. “I could see them smiling behind their face masks, which in turn would always make me grin.

“Though I was recovering, I have nothing but great memories about the fabulous teams in Coventry. When I came back, I was overcome with joy and so excited to show them they put me back on my feet!”

Dylan had been driving to work in Leicestershire when he lost control after a tyre blowout and ended up in a ditch.

He was airlifted to UHCW with a head injury, broken elbow, fractured femur and a fracture to the cervical spine.

After undergoing surgery the following morning, Dylan spent a week in Critical Care. During this time, he developed sepsis and his family were told to prepare for the worst, but thankfully he pulled through.

He was then moved to the Major Trauma Enhanced Care Unit before eventually before being transferred to Leicester General Hospital so he could be nearer to his family.

“The hospitals, especially Coventry, have done so much for him and we are so grateful that we wanted to say a big thank you to everybody,” said Dylan’s mum Dee.

“He’s gone from strength to strength. He was really thankful that the staff made the time to see him because we all appreciate how busy they are.”

Dylan had another operation on his elbow in April 2023 and may still require further surgery, but is otherwise close to a full recovery.

During the visit he handed out cards and gifts for staff – as well as enjoying a special lunchtime trip!

UHCW Major Trauma Acute Co-ordinator Aimee Taylor added: “It was lovely to be able to welcome Dylan and his family.

“During his recovery the family used to wheel him to Subway but, because of the injury to his elbow, he was not able to grip the sandwich with two hands. He wanted to go back there now and do that as a sign of how far he’s come!

“We treat a lot of patients but it’s not often you get to see them once they are back leading normal lives. That was heartwarming for us all and makes what we do so worthwhile.”
