Coventry Blaze and the Hand Hygiene Tour

As members of the Infection Prevention Society, the Infection, Prevention and Control team from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust received the ‘Hand Hygiene torch’ on the 8th July for a week. Their team ventured down to the Skydome Arena on Monday 11th July to help spread awareness about the importance of hand hygiene. They were met by the new Genting Casino Coventry Blaze Head Coach Danny Stewart.

After that, the ladies then assessed Danny on his hand washing ability using their UV Glow Box.

Stewart went on to say, “It’s really important to know this stuff especially in such a close environment that we have and to help keep away from unnecessary sickness. The team from the hospital Trust were really helpful and we are really happy as an organisation to help spread the awareness”.

Cleaning your hands is one of the most important actions anyone can carry out to prevent infection. For the past 15 years, patient safety organisations in the UK and the World Health Organisation globally, have been focused on making hand hygiene a routine behaviour in healthcare settings. Each year on 5th May, the World Health Organisation issues a ‘call to action’ that promotes hand hygiene globally. The Infection Prevention Society is supporting this call to action through a Hand Hygiene Relay involving the transfer of a torch baton around the UK and Ireland, in a similar fashion to the Olympic torch in 2012.

Allison Bradley, an Infection, Prevention and Control Nurse at UHCW NHS Trust, said:

“It’s been fantastic to be part of the Infection Prevention Society’s torch relay to raise awareness of hand hygiene amongst people across Coventry and Warwickshire. While good hand hygiene is especially important for people working in and visiting hospitals, the simple messages we’re promoting can help people in the community to stay safe and well too.

“The Coventry Blaze team has been so supportive of us, and we’d really like to thank them for being part of this tour and helping us to raise awareness even further.”
