New suite opens at University Hospital to provide privacy and dignity for families following baby loss

Families experiencing the heartbreak of baby loss can now access a new dedicated Bereavement Suite at University Hospital in Coventry.

The purpose-built space has been designed to offer grieving mothers, partners and relatives privacy, comfort and dignity at the most difficult of times.

Located away from the Labour Ward, the suite includes high-level soundproofing and a separate entrance so families can spend time together in a quieter and more private environment.

The development was funded by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, with additional support from UHCW Charity to help furnish the rooms and make them feel more comfortable and welcoming.

Chief Nursing Officer Tracey Brigstock said: “Baby loss is devastating and we know how important it is for families to have a calm, private space where they can be together and receive compassionate support.

“This suite has been shaped by feedback from patients, families and colleagues, and reflects our commitment to continually improving the care we provide. I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this possible, including those who have shared their own experiences to help support others.”

The project has been supported by families who have experienced baby loss themselves, with many helping to raise funds for items including artwork, sofas and tea and coffee making facilities.

Special thanks are also due to the dedicated project group, whose patience, insight and commitment helped bring this important new facility to completion.

UHCW Charity Director, Jo O’Sullivan, added: “The families and supporters behind this appeal have done something truly special. From climbing mountains to running marathons, they have turned their own experiences and determination into practical support for others.

“Their generosity has helped to make the suite feel more homely and welcoming, giving families a space where they can spend precious time together and feel cared for when they need it most.”
