Recognise your NHS heroes at annual UHCW staff awards

Hollywood royalty may have celebrating their Oscars wins last month, but a local hospital Trust is looking to recognise NHS stars at its very own OSCA ceremony.

Patients of University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby are being asked to share their stories of outstanding patient care or customer service.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust is calling for patients and relatives to nominate staff and volunteers for its 11th annual Outstanding Service and Care Awards (OSCAs).

Last year, the Trust received over 400 nominations for staff and teams in a wide variety of roles across the Trust.  Two of last year’s winners were nominated by staff and patients.

Audrey Hopwood, Macmillan Neuro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, won the Chief Executive Officer’s Award.  Audrey was nominated by a man for the care she provided to his wife.

Mr Stephen Cooke, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, scooped the Going the Extra Mile for Patients Award for the care he had provided to a young patient for almost a decade.

This year there are eight categories for public nominations.

Andy Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of UHCW NHS Trust, said:

“I am proud to announce that the nominations are now open for this year’s OSCAs.

“Every day I hear wonderful stories from patients and relatives about the lengths our staff go to help them.  With the NHS celebrating its 70th birthday this year, it’s a great opportunity to recognise the amazing work our staff do to care for patients.

I’d like to encourage any members of the public who have received outstanding care or service at either of our hospitals in the last 12 months to say thank you by putting in an OSCA nomination.”

The award categories open for public nominations are:

Apprentice of the Year – to recognise the contribution that UHCW’s 33 apprentices have made over the last year.

Behind the Scenes Team or Individual of the Year – for non-clinical staff providing an essential service such as finance, human resources or administration.

Chief Executive Officer’s Award – for an individual or team who has made an exceptional contribution to the Trust.

Compassion in Care – for a frontline member of staff (e.g. nurse, doctor, physiotherapist) or team delivering patient care.

Going the Extra Mile – for any member of staff who has gone over and above their role to improve care for patients or relatives.

Innovation or Service Development – for staff whose innovative ideas or research have led to improvements in care.

Leader of the Year – for a member of staff who has demonstrated they are a good manager or leader.

Volunteer of the Year – for a volunteer at University Hospital or the Hospital of St Cross who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and support to patients, staff or visitors.

Patients or members of the public can complete their nomination online via UHCW’s website at www.uhcw.nhs.uk/osca.  Alternatively they can ask for a nomination form to be posted to them by emailing oscas@uhcw.nhs.uk or calling 024 7696 7617.

The closing date for nominations is 23:59 on Thursday 31 May.  The winners will be announced in September.
