Tom recognised as rising star in social media

A dynamic Communications Officer at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) has been nominated for a national rising star award.

Tom Phelan, 28, has been shortlisted for the Mark Hanson Award at this year’s UK Social Media Awards.

The Mark Hanson Award recognises communications professionals under the age of 30 for their contribution to developing social media within their organisations.

Media Production graduate, Tom, from Nuneaton, said: “I am delighted and surprised to be shortlisted for this award. It is fantastic to be recognised for my work and is something I am very proud of.”

Since starting at UHCW in 2014, Tom has increased the audience on the Trust Facebook by over 800% going from 776 to over 8,000 likes, helped UHCW become one of the first NHS Trusts to start using Instagram and has led on including video both internally and externally.

Chief Workforce and Information Officer, Karen Martin, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Tom and we are proud to have him at UHCW.

“His work hasn’t gone unnoticed and helping to reach a new audience through social media is crucial for us to engage with our local community.”

The winners will be announced on November 3 at a ceremony at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, London.
