Trailblazing work involving artificial intelligence wins UHCW a top global award

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust’s pioneering work using artificial intelligence (AI) and process mining techniques to benefit patients has been recognised globally.

The Trust has been named as a winner in the 2025 Tech Innovation CUBEd Awards, which celebrate exceptional achievements in technological advancement.

The awards judges – world-leading experts in technology and innovation – said our entry for the Top Internal AI Implementation category stood out among an exceptional pool of submissions and reflected the significant, trailblazing impact UHCW is making in the healthcare sector.

Our submission explained how UHCW NHS Trust has set a new standard in healthcare by working with process mining technology specialists Celonis to improve Outpatient services.

By optimising the timing of text reminders to patients, we were able to reduce the Did Not Attend (DNA) rate from 10 to four per cent. This avoided 1,800 missed appointments each week, allowing 900 more patients to be seen per week.

The success of the project caught the attention of NHS England and other trusts and has positioned the Trust as a Centre of Excellence for process mining.

Professor Andy Hardy, CEO of UHCW NHS Trust, said: “UHCW NHS Trust has long been a pioneer of innovation, embracing new ways of working so patients get the help they need in a timely way, and the use of AI to help reduce the number of missed appointments is another example of how new technologies are helping to improve care for patients, and ensuring the health service is making the best and most efficient use of taxpayers’ money.

“Winning a CUBEd Award shows how far forward we are in our AI and innovation journey within the NHS. It’s a proud moment for us as an organisation and we are looking forward to continuing to work with AI and expand its use beyond DNAs, where even more patients will benefit.”

UHCW NHS Trust was selected from a competitive field of nominees by a panel of industry experts and technology leaders chosen by CUBEd, a respected publishing company which covers emerging technology developments worldwide.

"The winners of our inaugural Tech Innovation CUBEd Awards represent some of the boldest thinkers and determined innovators in the tech industry,” said Dave Vellante, co-founder and co-CEO of SiliconANGLE Media, which runs the awards.

“Each person, company and product honoured has proven that true breakthroughs happen when we dare to challenge traditional conventions and pursue ambitious visions."
