UHCW recognised for measures to keep a healthy workforce

The NHS Trust which runs University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby has received two national endorsements for its work to help staff keep fit and healthy.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust has been shortlisted for the Vivup Award for Wellbeing at this year’s Healthcare People Management Association (HMPA) Awards.

The award nod follows the organisation being accredited by the Workplace Wellbeing Charter; a national award for England.  Coventry City Council conducted the assessment late last year, and found that the Trust met all the national standards under the Charter.  The support the Trust supplied to help staff stop smoking was especially praised, with the Trust receiving an Excellence Award in this area.

The Trust runs regular health and wellbeing days, and offers several wellbeing initiatives such as staff health checks, weight management sessions and mindfulness.

Karen Martin, Chief Workforce and Information Officer at UHCW NHS Trust, said:

“At UHCW we’re really proud of the support we provide to our staff.  Being shortlisted for this award, and our accreditation with the Workplace and Wellbeing Charter recognise the work that our Health & Wellbeing team have done to help staff keep healthy.

“We’ve installed a new green gym at the Hospital of St Cross, with one due to arrive at University Hospital soon, increased the number of healthy eating options on our sites, and also offered everything from mindfulness sessions to pilates classes for our staff.  As a responsible employer, we want to do everything we can to support all our staff to keep healthy and well.”

The HMPA Awards will be held in London on 7 June.

UHCW NHS Trust was assessed on 27 November 2017 by Coventry City Council for the Workplace Wellbeing Charter National Award for England.

The assessors from Coventry City Council interviewed 30 members of staff and conducted a site visit.  They assessed the Trust on eight different standards, and found that it met all of them, with Absence Management receiving an Achievement Award, and Smoking and Tobacco being recognised with an Excellence Award.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust employs over 8,600 staff at University Hospital in Coventry, and the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.
