Unsung heroes - NHS 70 Stories - Betty

This is the moment that 94-year-old Betty met twins Maggie and Harry.

Her knitting has been keeping our premature babies warm for nearly 30 years.

It is a cause very close to her heart.

Her only granddaughters were born prematurely 39 years ago, they died within a few hours so Betty never had the chance to hold them.

But she has never forgotten them and has knitted thousands of hats and cardigans in their memory.

Kind hearted Betty can spend up to eight hours a day knitting, pink, blue and yellow hats and cardigans.

We think she is amazing.

Betty said: ‘I’ve waited a long time to hold a baby again, this has made my day. I’ve been treated like the Queen.”

Sue Aucutt, transitional care manager said: “Betty is fantastic and it was wonderful to be able to able to introduce her to just some of the babies and parents who benefit from her dedication.”
