Our Board have a wide range of qualifications and experience that will guide us through as we work to realise our strategic priorities and achieve our vision as set out in our organisational strategy.

Dame Stella Manzie DBE - Chair

Date of appointment as Board Member: October 2019

Experience: Dame Stella has previously held a number of executive senior positions in the public sector, ranging from Chief Executive of local authorities in Coventry, Barking and Dagenham, Redditch and West Berkshire, to Director–General in the Civil Service (Scottish Government).

She has substantial experience in improving frontline public services while working in a democratic environment. Dame Stella has worked extensively in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, holding the post of Chief Executive of Coventry City Council from 2001 to 2008.

Stella Manzie‘s other roles include being a Trustee of the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and a Visiting Fellow of the Open University. She has recently been Commissioner Managing Director at Rotherham Council and Interim Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council and was honoured in 2018 for her work in these roles. Dame Stella is a graduate of Newnham College, Cambridge University, and holds an MSocSci in Local Government and Health from University of Birmingham.

Professor Andy Hardy - Chief Executive Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: Chief Finance Officer - June 2004, Deputy Chief Executive - July 2008, CEO - June 2010

Professional Qualifications: BA(Hons) Economics, Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy, MBA

Experience: Andy is Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW).  

Andy is Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), one of the largest tertiary acute Trusts in the country, with an annual turnover in excess of £850m.

Andy was appointed Chief Executive Officer in 2010. For the six years prior to that he was Chief Finance Officer of UHCW, as well as Deputy Chief Executive Officer from 2008-2010.

In addition, Andy sits on a number of boards including the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN), Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), Warwick Business School Faculty Advisory Board, NHS Elect and Global Health Data at Work

In January 2016 Andy was appointed Professor of Industry at the University of Warwick.

In addition to his Chief Executive Officer role, Andy was appointed as Senior Responsible Officer of the Coventry & Warwickshire STP Footprint in March 2016. A position he held until July 2021.

Andy is also a Director of Albany Theatre Trust, Coventry, and a Trustee of ExtraCare.

Kiran Patel - Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Medical Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: July 2019

Professional Qualifications: PhD, FRCP

Experience: Kiran graduated from King's College, Cambridge University in 1993 and is a practising Consultant Cardiologist. He did his PhD in Bristol on cardiac myocyte contraction. He was appointed an Honorary Professor at Warwick University in 2018 and Coventry University in 2019 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London).

He has held several senior NHS leadership positions, managing significant transformational change not only in cardiac services but as Clinical Director at West Midlands Strategic Health authority (2009-11), Medical Director for West Mercia PCT Cluster (2011-13), Good Hope hospital (2013-14) and more recently as Medical Director for NHS England (West Midlands (2014-19).

He currently sits on the board of the BMJ group to drive globalisation of education and training to achieve its mission of a healthier world. As part of that global health system work he recently worked with Warwick University to advise the Thai government and with Coventry University to advise the Indonesian government on health system strengthening. He is currently leading work on workforce development and quality improvement in the NHS.

Laura nelson - Chief Operating Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: July 2019

Professional Qualifications: BSC Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation, MSC Health Informatics

Experience: Laura is Chief Operating Officer of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW). Beginning her career as part of the NHS Management Training Scheme Laura has an MSc in Health Informatics. She has worked at UHCW in the role of Performance and Informatics Director for three years. Prior to joining UHCW, Laura worked in a range of performance roles including Head of Performance and Informatics and Performance Manager at Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust.

Laura is an experienced Corporate Director with intensive experience in service analysis, decision support, KPI monitoring and performance forecasting utilising innovative methods to drive operational performance.

Laura recently took part in the Aspiring Leaders Executive Programme for the Midlands region and continues to be an advocate for the Graduate Management Scheme supporting new trainees in the position of Programme Manager.

Nina Morgan - Chief Nursing Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: November 2016

Experience: Nina has been a Registered Nurse for thirty years, having trained at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Nina specialised in Oncology Nursing and then in palliative care and has worked in the NHS and voluntary sector settings. Nina has held senior leadership positions for Marie Curie Cancer Care, where she completed her MSc in Nursing Research and Practice Development. Nina held her first Director of Nursing position in NHS Shetland and before joining University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire she was Director of Nursing at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust for four years. Nina is committed to delivering excellent standards of care; she is the Board lead for Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health Professionals and Healthcare Scientists. She is also the Board’s Director for Infection Prevention and Control and for Adults and Children’s Safeguarding.

In January 2020 Nina was awarded an honorary professorship from Coventry University.

Susan Rollason - Chief Finance Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: January 2018 as Interim Chief Finance and Strategy Officer, July 2018 as Chief Finance Officer

Professional Qualifications: A.C.M.A; C.G.M.A, MSc (econ) Accounting and Finance, BSc (econ) hons Accounting and Finance with Law

Experience: Susan is a qualified accountant with over ten years of senior Director level experience. She was previously the Director of Finance and Strategy for the Trust.

She is passionate about the NHS and started her career on the NHS Graduate training scheme in 1998 having graduated with a first class honours bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Following completion of the scheme Susan worked at University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust in a variety of roles including two projects of national significance: the Birmingham New Hospital and the Royal Centre of Defence Medicine.

Susan has been an expert lecturer for the Warwick University MBA course and is a key speaker in many HFMA events. She is a coach for The Girls’ Network, an organisation set up to inspire and empower girls from the least advantaged communities by connecting them to a professional role model. 

Donna Griffiths - Chief People Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: September 2020

Professional Qualifications: BSc Honours in Human Resource Management, Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management


Donna has built up extensive experience in leading and transforming services during a 15 year NHS career.

Her professional expertise in Organisational Development, Resourcing, Recruitment, Employee relations, Learning and Education and Staff Well-being has been developed by working across various provider organisations in the East Midlands through the NHS Graduate Training Scheme.

Donna joined UHCW in June 2008 and has led the implementation of people, organisational development and cultural change strategies and programmes in a range of professional roles, including Divisional HR Manager, Associate Director of Workforce and most recently Director of Workforce / Deputy Chief Workforce and Information Officer.

Her portfolio covers Workforce, Performance and Informatics, Transformation and Equality and Diversity. As well as being a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Donna is a Committee Member for the West Midlands Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) and, as an alumni member, continues to support the NHS Graduate Training Scheme as a programme and placement manager capacity.

Justine Richards - Chief Strategy Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: September 2018

Professional Qualifications: Full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Employment Relations, Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies, NHS Leadership Academy Top Leaders Programme

Experience: Justine has worked for the NHS for 20 years and has experience in strategic planning, business development and commissioning senior management. Justine has also worked as an Interim Director Strategy & Business Support  for two years and Programme Director Foundation Trust and Business Development Lead for three years. Justine is currently partaking Executive Coaching and Action Learning.

Mo Hussain - Chief Quality Officer

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: November 2019

Experience: Mo Hussain is an experienced NHS leader who has had a variety of roles across different NHS organisations including Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Black Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the Heart of England Foundation Trust. 

For the last six years he has covered briefs at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, including Transformation and Service Improvement and most recently as the Director of Strategy and Partnerships.


Jerry Gould - Vice Chair

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: January 2019

Experience: Jerry Gould joined University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire in January 2019 as an associate Non-Executive Director and became a full Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Trust’s Audit Committee in April 2019.

Jerry worked for 20 years in local government reaching head of service level. He moved into the private sector as part of a management buyout of the local authority services. Following sale of the company, he became a management consultant and joined Touche Ross (now Deloitte) in 1993.

Jerry retired as a Deloitte partner in October 2011 after 18 years. He has advised or led teams advising over 100 public sector clients particularly in relation to public sector performance improvement, service contracting, use of new delivery models, e.g. not-for-profit vehicles, and procurement of major capital projects through (for example) PFI. Before retiring from full-time work, he provided business advisory services to local authorities until April 2018 and became a non-executive director of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in 2012 where he continues to serve as chair of its Finance & Performance Committee and the Trust’s Vice Chair.

In his spare time is a long-distance walker and serves as a Cotswold Voluntary Warden maintaining the footpath infrastructure and environment in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Sudhesh Kumar - Non-Executive Director

Date of appointment as a Board Member: July 2016

Professional Qualifications: MRCP (UK), M.D, FRCP (London), FRCPath

Experience: In addition to his role as Non-Executive Director at the Trust, Sudhesh is Dean of the Warwick Medical School. He is also a Non Executive Director on the Board of NHS Digital, a member of the Medical Schools Council, and of Clinical Academic Staffing Advisory Group for UCEA. He is a clinical endocrinologist by background with 22 years’ experience as a Consultant Physician in the NHS.

His research interest is obesity and its complications, particularly Type 2 diabetes.

His interests include developing novel approaches, including medical technology to managing obesity and diabetes that has helped to transform and improve patient care and treatment. He has published over 240 papers and six books on these subjects.

Jenny Mawby-Groom - Non-Executive Director

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: January 2019

Professional Qualifications: Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance Association

Experience: Jenny Mawby-Groom joined University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire as an Associate Non-Executive Director in January 2019.

After completing the NHS National Finance Training Scheme, Jenny worked for Gloucestershire Partnership and Severn NHS Trusts for 10 years, reaching the position of Director of Finance. Here she established a new Trust as part of the strategic management team, bringing together services, staff and systems from four different organisations in Gloucestershire.

Jenny moved into the private sector as a Company Director for a locum agency for GPs in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire while also serving as a Financial Analyst, External Financial NHS Consultant and Interim Deputy Director of Finance for Gloucestershire PCT.

Between 2008 and 2013, Jenny served as Financial Controller and External Consultant for Warwick Independent Schools Foundation before assuming her current role as a Financial Controller for three private sector companies, providing financial and HR services and supporting business restructuring and grant sourcing.

Working in and for the NHS is a passion and a privilege for Jenny, who has also served as a Governor for Kineton High School in Warwickshire.

Professor Guy Daly - Non-Executive Director

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: October 2019

Experience: Professor Daly is a member of West Midlands NHS Clinical Senate, working collaboratively across the region to improve healthcare.

As Chair of the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System Clinical Design Authority, he has been helping shape the future model for healthcare delivery. 

At Coventry University, he provides strategic leadership across the Health and Life Sciences for the University Group. Guy represents the University on the Coventry Health and Wellbeing Board and West Midlands universities on the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Wellbeing Board.  Over the last four years he has served as a Non-Executive Director of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Partnership Trust.

Professor Daly is a trustee of both Research in Specialist and Elderly Care (RESEC) and Extra Care charitable trusts.  He is also a member of the Executive of the Council of Deans of Health where he is responsible for its global portfolio. His research interests include social care, housing policy, local government and the governance of public services. He is an active member of the Social Policy Association and the Social Services Research Group. He is joint editor of the journal Research Policy and Planning. 

Afzal Ismail - Non-Executive Director

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: April 2020

Professional Qualifications: FCCA (Member of the Chartered Institute of Certified Accounts), CMIIA (Member of the Chartered Institute of Auditors), MCIH (Member of Chartered Institute of Housing), BSc (Hons) Mathematics, QIAL (Qualification in Audit Leadership).

Experience: Having lived and worked in Coventry for more than 30 years, Afzal is a strong supporter of the services offered by UHCW, having benefited first-hand with both of his children being born on Trust sites, and family members being cared for by UHCW staff.

Afzal is an experienced Executive Director and Non-Executive Director who has worked in various committees such as finance, governance & remuneration and treasury.

Currently, Afzal is an Executive Director at housing association Orbit Group, and leads acquisition and growth projects for the business, as well as corporate services including IT & Digital Transformation, Business Improvement and Procurement. In addition, his division also leads Customer Engagement strategies. As well as this, Afzal serves on the Board of a large multi-academy schools trust based in Coventry, which has an outstanding rating.

Afzal is interested in the challenges faced within the public sector and passionate about the NHS and maintaining and improving UHCW’s services for patients and the local community.

Carole Mills - Non-Executive Director

Date of Appointment as a Board Member: April 2020

Professional Qualifications: Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).

Experience: Carole was born and grew up in Coventry, has lived in the Midlands all her life, and has family and friends both in the city and wider region. She has 37 years’ experience operating in the public sector, with 18 years working at board level.

With an in-depth understanding of strategic and operational financial management, Carole is a former Chief Finance Officer and has held Chief Executive posts in three local authorities, having worked in five unitary councils.

Carole is a Non-Executive Director at housing association Midland Heart, chairs the Operations Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee. In addition, Carole is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), and was one of the founding trustees of Women Leaders UK.

Along with her professional knowledge, Carole will be bringing her expertise in organisational transformation, performance improvement and complex partnership working to the Trust and will be maintaining the organisation’s high standards across the local community.
