Alpha 1 - Antitrypsin Deficiency Clinics

West Midlands alpha 1-Antitrypsin Deficiency Service - Coventry

At University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, we provide a multi-disciplinary NHS service for patients with alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). At our hospital, patients with this rare genetic condition have access to a team of specialists that include consultants from the lung, liver and skin departments, with support from specialist nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists, pharmacists and physiologists. All outpatient appointments are with consultants, rather than junior doctors, and other members of the clinical team are included in the consultations according to individual clinical need.

The team is led by Consultant Respiratory Physician, Professor David Parr, who has worked extensively within the field of AATD and is recognised for his research on the use of CT scanning to measure lung disease in AATD. Dr Lara also has an extensive track record of caring for patients with AATD, including treatment with augmentation therapy in Spain, and has run the Spanish Alpha-1 registry for many years. Further information on the principal team members can be found at the links below;

Professor David Parr, Consultant Respiratory Physician
Dr Beatriz Lara, Consultant Respiratory Physician
Dr Esther Unitt, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist
Dr Andy Ilchyshyn, Consultant Dermatologist
Professor Dimitri Grammatopoulos, Principal Biochemist
Dr Rhian Hughes, Research and Clinical Trials Coordinator
