Endocrinology and Diabetes

The diabetes and endocrinology service at UHCW is provided from the flagship Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism (WISDEM) Centre.
This is a specialist facility tackling diabetes and related metabolic and endocrine conditions to help improve the care of individuals with diabetes and other hormonal illnesses through combined excellence in inter-professional clinical care, education, innovation and translational research.
Our specialist clinical services are provided by more than 45 researchers and clinicians, including consultant staff, specialist registrars, researchers, fellows, specialist nurses and chief podiatric specialist.
The Department for Diabetes & Endocrinology has an exceptional multidisciplinary environment, delivering more than 20 highly specialist clinical services as well as educational and teaching activities.
We also pride ourselves in taking part in integral core research activities which incorporate complex clinical studies in diabetes and metabolism. These are led by Professor Harpal Randeva with more than 30 researchers and clinicians, forming highly specialist multi-professional teams, comprising of an array of healthcare professionals and clinicians. Professor Randeva is also the current Director of Research and Development at UHCW.
We provide care for patients with complex endocrine and diabetes-related conditions, of which can include, renal, advanced stage diabetes foot and cardiovascular complications. The WISDEM centre offers a range of dedicated multidisciplinary clinical services. These include the following specialist clinics: Complex Endocrine and Diabetes, Pituitary & Neuroendocrine Tumours, Metabolic Bone Disease/Osteoporosis, PCOS, Reproductive Endocrinology, Metabolic Liver Clinic, Obesity/Specialist Weight Management, Thyroid, Lipid, Turner’s Syndrome.
Our interdisciplinary teams provide services in innovative ways. A few examples of these services include; Obesity (Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery), the nationally accredited Neuroendocrine Tumour Service, the Diabetes Acute Foot Service, and Young Adult Diabetes services.
As research is strongly supported within the department, you may be invited to participate in studies. If you are interested in taking part, please ask if there are any studies suitable for you.
You will be cared for by our dedicated team of health professionals highly specialised in the management of complex diabetes, endocrine and metabolic conditions.
Our Department for Diabetes & Endocrinology is conveniently located in the East Wing of University Hospital Coventry in the WISDEM centre. It comprises of a reception suite with waiting, clerking and observation rooms, and adjacent washroom facility for ease of obtaining samples. This suite offers an excellent environment for patients and volunteers to participate in clinical research studies in comfort and privacy.
There are 10 clinical examination rooms, a further two rooms provide dedicated facility for the operational requirements of the Diabetes Acute Foot Service, as well as other specialist areas enabling day to day research activity and specialist medical and endocrine nursing function.
These include Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN’s) providing access and drop-in services, blood glucose monitoring clinics - new starts and checks, with adolescent/insulin pump/transition diabetes clinic supporting young people transferring to adult services, and consultant diabetes clinics running simultaneously with DSN clinics.
If your GP feels that you need to see a Diabetologist or Endocrinologist, they will send a referral to us via the choose and book service. All referrals are triaged and prioritised by a consultant to ensure your appointment is made in the appropriate clinic.
