Gastroenterology at UHCW is a dynamic and innovative department delivering gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition and endoscopy services.
The gastroenterology department is led by a team of 15 consultants who deliver specialised care for a wide range of gastroenterological conditions.
Our hepatology service is led by a team of four consultants, supported by specialist nurses, specialist registrars and junior doctors.
We provide seven-day emergency cover for gastroenterology inpatients and 24 hour endoscopy cover for upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Our endoscopy department is JAG accredited and offers diagnostic gastroscopy and colonoscopy alongside a range of more complex procedures (for further information visit our Endoscopy page)
Research is strongly supported within the department and patients may be invited to participate in studies. If you are interested in taking part, please ask if there are any studies suitable for you.
Hepatology
UHCW is a recognised Level Two Hepatology Centre and our Nutrition service is accredited for delivery of home parenteral nutrition.
We offer specialist care to patients with viral hepatitis, alcohol related liver disease, fatty liver and cirrhosis as well as to patients with rare conditions such as auto-immune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AIAT).
Dedicated clinics for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) attract regional referrals for specific treatments such as radio-frequency ablation (RFA) and trans-arterial chemo-embolisation (TACE).
We offer Fibroscans for non-invasive assessment of liver scarring (fibrosis) and we also work closely with our radiologists to offer complex hepato-biliary interventions such as liver biopsy, percutaneous biliary drainage and trans-jugular intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPS) insertion.
Liver and pancreatic surgery is performed at UHCW by our hepato-biliary surgical team. Liver transplantation is not offered at UHCW, patients are referred to Birmingham
If you are admitted to Ward 32, you will be cared for by our team of nurses specialised in the management of complex gastroenterological conditions.
A dedicated on-call gastroenterology consultant will oversee your care whilst in the hospital. If you have a long-term condition, please be aware that this may be a different consultant to the doctor you usually see in clinic.
For patients with highly complex conditions, the on-call gastroenterology consultant may discuss aspects of your care with dedicated specialists in hepatology, nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease.
If you have any questions about your relative’s care during a hospital stay, please contact the ward and ask to speak to one of the nurses or doctors. They will be able to advise you who would be best placed to discuss your concerns. The ward manager is Charge Nurse Giurex Moncera.
If your GP feels that you need to see a gastroenterologist or hepatologist, they will send a referral to us via the choose and book service.
All referrals are triaged and prioritised by a consultant to ensure your appointment is made in the appropriate clinic.
We have specialised urgent clinics for patients with suspected cancer or for serious symptoms like jaundice.
If your GP refers you to one of these clinics, you should receive an appointment within two weeks.
