Rheumatology

The department is led by a team of eight consultants who provide general and specialist care for a wide variety of rheumatological conditions, supported by specialist nurses, registrars and clinical fellows.
We offer the following services:
• General rheumatology
• Early inflammatory arthritis clinic
• Connective tissue disease clinic
• Psoriatic arthritis clinic
• Spondyloarthropathy clinic
• Adolescent Rheumatology/Transition clinic
• Osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease clinic
• Vasculitis clinic
• Rapid Access Giant cell arteritis pathway.

Research is strongly supported within the department and patients may be invited to participate in studies. If you are interested in taking part, please ask if there are any studies suitable for you. We have a wide variety of research studies running from University Hospital, Coventry.

We are currently recruiting to the following studies:
ALTO: Arthritis prevention in the pre-clinical phase of RA with Abatacept (APIPPRA) Long term outcome study.
British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Registers
Psoriatic Arthritis: Looking at the safety and effectiveness of biologic and biosimilar treatment for psoriatic arthritis.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: looking at the safety and effectiveness of biologic and biosimilar treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
BILAG Biologics Register: looking at the safety and effectiveness of biologic and biosimilar treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
BODYCOPA: Body composition in Psoriatic disease and arthritis.
MONITOR: Multicentre ObservatioNal Initiative in Treat to target Outcomes in Psoriatic arthritis.
PRO-SPIRIT: Psoriatic Arthritis Observational Study of Persistence of Treatment.
SELECT-GCA: Safety and efficacy of upadacitinib in Giant cell arteritis UK and Ireland Vasculitis Society (UKIVAS) Register: looking at the safety and effectiveness of biologic and biosimilar treatment for systemic vasculitis.

UHCW is also part of the Arthritis Therapy Acceleration Programme, which is run in collaboration with the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham. More information can be found here.
Rheumatology clinics at UHCW take place at University Hospital, Coventry, and at Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. Day case treatments are provided by the Rheumatology Day Unit, based at the rear of clinic six at University Hospital.
There is a dedicated on-call rheumatology consultant to cover emergency and out of hours care, supported by rheumatology junior doctors. Many biologic therapies are now delivered to patients at home by a variety of home care companies, co-ordinated by our pharmacy homecare team.
If your GP feels that you need to see a rheumatologist, they will send a referral to us via the choose and book service. All referrals are triaged and prioritised by a consultant to ensure your appointment is made in the appropriate clinic. We have specialised urgent clinics for early inflammatory arthritis and a fast track service for suspected giant cell arteritis.
