Paediatrics

The Children's in-patient unit and Children’s Emergency Department are located at University Hospital. We provide for a full range of emergency services and planned admissions. There are 52 infant and children's beds including adolescent facilities and up to 6 High Dependency beds. Children requiring Intensive Care are stabilised jointly by Paediatricians and Intensivists prior to retrieval to a PICU. There are approximately 30,000 attendances at the Children’s Emergency Department resulting in 4000 admissions.

There is a Hospital School, a full time Play leader and a full range of specialist support staff including Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language therapists, Social work and a Health Visitor Liaison. The Unit is staffed to all current recommendations, with more than 90% of the trained staff being Registered Sick Children's Nurses.

A highly successful Hospital at Home service has been established in Rugby. Many children who might otherwise have either been admitted to hospital, or had longer length of stay, are now being nursed in their local community.
