The UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network

The UK Parkinson's Excellence Network was launched on 3 February 2015 at St. James Theatre, London. The Network was set up to drive improvements in services, experiences and outcomes for people affected by Parkinson's by:

strengthening the voice of people affected

equipping professionals to influence services

developing the right expert workforce

enabling professionals to work together for change

The Network is designed to be inclusive of anyone involved in delivering Parkinson's services. In the West Midlands, we have more than 200 members, comprising mainly doctors, Parkinson’s nurses and therapists but also managers, pharmacists and psychologists. These healthcare professionals meet once a year to discuss means by which care of people with Parkinson’s can be improved in our region. There is regular email discussion and updates between meetings.

The West Midlands Parkinson’s Network is jointly led by Dr Andrea Lindahl and Dr Lucy Strens, consultant neurologists based at UHCW in Coventry.

The Network is currently working on a number of areas including:

  • Earlier referrals to therapists from the point of diagnosis
  • Education and Self-Management Programmes supporting people with Parkinson’s to stay well and active
  • Avoiding unnecessary hospital admission: prompt recognition and treatment of infections, prevention and management of constipation, preventing falls where possible
  • Improving the experience of people with Parkinson’s in hospital
  • Identifying inequalities in access to services and the ‘Postcode lottery’
  • Ensuring people with Parkinson’s can access non-oral therapies when appropriate

We are developing better links between professionals involved in the care of people with Parkinson’s locally, regionally and also nationally, sharing ideas and examples of good practice.

We are keen to hear from you!

If you have comments or suggestions on how the Parkinson’s service in Coventry and Warwickshire could be improved, please contact your local Parkinson’s UK Branch chair or your local advisor (see details above). Our Coventry & Warwickshire local team of doctors, nurses, therapists and Parkinson’s UK colleagues meet every three months and we would welcome your feedback.
