The Performance & Informatics (P&I) department is a highly regarded and substantial component of UHCW's corporate services.
P&I's comprehensive portfolio encompasses information systems development, corporate performance, business intelligence and informatics, patient access, clinical coding, data quality and Cancer Services.
P&I collaborates across the organisation to support the Trust's achievement of both national and internal objectives, ultimately ensuring the delivery of optimal patient care. A robust Performance Management Framework is embedded throughout UHCW to monitor, evaluate and inform operational and clinical governance.
P&I is at the forefront of developing innovative solutions at a national level, addressing critical areas such as health inequalities, waiting list management and system integration. A prime example of this is the groundbreaking HEARTT (Health Equity and the Right to Treatment) tool, which was recognised with the prestigious Health Service Journal Award for Innovation and Improvement in Reducing Healthcare Inequalities in 2022.
Business Intelligence
New opportunities at a national level are being developed by P&I in areas of health inequality, waiting list management and system working.
Most notably, we worked innovatively to develop the Health Equity and the Right to Treatment (HEARTT) tool which culminated in being awarded the Innovation and Improvement in Reducing Healthcare Inequalities Award 2022 and also being recognised with the Best Healthcare Analytics Award 2024 for the collaborative work alongside IBM and Celonis regarding Outpatient Optimisation and Patient Engagement at the prestigious Health Service Journal Awards.

Dan Hayes: Director of Performance and Informatics
Dan is the Director of Performance & Informatics at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, overseeing critical areas such as Cancer Services, Clinical Coding, Business Intelligence and Patient Access. His leadership extends beyond UHCW as he serves as the national lead for process mining and Artificial Intelligence (AI), driving innovation and efficiency in healthcare delivery across the country.
Dan has driven innovation and success at UHCW, winning two HSJ awards in 2022 for his work in health inequalities and 2024 for bringing process mining into healthcare and being awarded the best analytical project.
With a tenure starting in January 2014, Dan has spearheaded transformative initiatives like theatre transformation, waste reduction schemes and most, notably, data mining for outpatient care, resulting in significant reductions in post-Cpvid waiting lists. His diverse healthcare background includes management roles in Emergency Department (ED) and Clinical Diagnostics before transitioning to his current strategic position.
Hashim Ali: Head of Clincial Coding and Data Quality
Hashim Ali leads the clinical coding and data quality function within the wider P&I portfolio at UHCW. He joined the NHS in 2013 as a trainee clinical coder, quickly attaining the NCCQ Clinical Coding qualification with distinction. Hashim gradually worked his way up from Trainee Clinical Coder to Clinical Coding supervisory roles such as Clinical Coding Site Supervisor at Leicester General and Deputy Clinical Coding Manager at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s respectively.
Having read Biomedical Sciences at undergraduate level, Hashim is passionate about using his healthcare knowledge to improve capturing all aspects of data quality including clinical coded data. Hashim has been involved in clinical coding improvement projects using his expertise in clinical documentation to improve coded information to drive trust financial remuneration. Hashim is currently undertaking a part time MSc in Global Healthcare Management through UHCW to further support his skills being due to graduate in 2023.
Merlisa de Jesus: Head of Patient Access
Merlisa leads the RTT team and the Booking Centre within the wider P&I portfolio. Merlisa joined UHCW in 2015 as an Admin Manager in Radiology and was later promoted to Operational and Performance Manager and then to Associate Group Manager across Clinical Diagnostics to include Pathology and Audiology. Passionate about performance and training, she joined the Performance and Informatics Team in 2020 to work with the wider Groups within the Trust in developing and implementing training and performance improvement plans by ensuring the effective use of data and information to support decision making to improve the quality of care we provide for patients.
Merlisa moved to the UK from South Africa in 2015 to be closer to family. She studied at the University of the Free State after school and obtained her postgraduate degree in Medical Sociology. Whilst completing her postgraduate studies, she lectured first year medical students in Medical Sociology and completed her moderation qualification which enabled her to design and develop National Qualifications under the Department of Education.
John Elliott: Head of Cancer Services
John works alongside operational and clinical teams to support delivery of cancer pathways across the organisation.
Cancer Services team have the responsibility of tracking all patients referred on a cancer pathway and coordinate timely patient care through regular MDT meetings, together with Coventry & Warwickshire health and care partners. Cancer Services work together with P&I - Informatics team to provide timely and accurate intelligence at organisational and service level to support operational performance and pathway transformation.
John brings experience of leading transformational healthcare programmes at national and regional level in England. This has included working with the Care Quality Commission on the deployment of the new inspection model of Acute Providers in 2013 and with NHS England and Academic Health Science Networks on the Test Bed programme in 2017. John has separately acquired significant Acute operational experience, having worked across a broad range of specialties including Surgery, Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
John has an academic interest in sustainability in the built environment, graduating from The University of Nottingham in Environmental Science in 2009 followed by an MA in Environmental Management & Planning at University of Liverpool in 2010. He is a qualified Healthcare Quality Improvement Coach, having graduated from the Sheffield Microsystems Coaching Academy in 2016, whilst working at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals as a Quality Improvement Facilitator.
Chris Clark: Head of Analytical Development
Chris works alongside external partners spearheading collaborative ventures to explore cutting-edge technologies and data-driven solutions.
His portfolio boasts successful project deliveries, notably partnering with industry giants like IBM and Celonis. This collaboration resulted in UHCW pioneering outpatient transformation and becoming the first healthcare organisation in Europe to leverage data mining effectively. Always having the patient in mind with any project, this work has delivered a large consistent weekly reduction in our waiting lists helping the Trust with its elective recovery.
Chris commenced his journey with UHCW in February 2014, making significant contributions within Performance and Informatics. Over the past decade, Chris has had successful project deliveries, from helping launch the Friends and Family Test, to leading on Flu reporting and then leading the Trust’s Covid-19 reporting.
Peter Betts: Head of Buiness Intelligence
Peter Betts is our Head of Business Intelligence and Performance Reporting and leads the teams across Analytics, Performance, Corporate and ISD. He joined UHCW in August 2021 in the role of Business Operations Manager working directly for the Chief Operating Officer, and prior to this he worked at Coca Cola for 22 years in a variety of roles. In more recent years as GB Commercial Operations Manager with a key focus to deliver dynamic reporting and insights to promote agility, efficiency and effectiveness.
As Business Operations Manager for UHCW, Pete has led and managed many projects including, Additional Sessions, My Planned Care, Hospital only Discharge, as well as preparing many internal and external papers and presentations. Pete has also been instrumental in supporting strategic and operational capital bids and securing funding for the Trust for various schemes.
Pete trained as a vaccinator and worked as part of the national Covid-19 vaccination team which gave him a great sense of pride and duty that drove him to pursue a career with UHCW. His aspiration is to be part of a team that impacts health outcomes for patients and communities through driving organisational performance.
