The Diabetes Service includes:
A weekly Diabetes Foot Clinic. Specialists within this clinic review and treat patients who have complications of diabetes affecting their feet. The team of specialists includes a vascular surgeon, Mr Christopher Imray, senior podiatrist, Mr Gurdev Singh Deogon and diabetes specialist team.
WISDEM Leads Dr Narasimha Murthy and Dr Ponusammy Saravanan treat patients with diabetes (Types 1, 2 and gestational diabetes) within this clinic are reviewed by teh diabetes and endocrine (led by Harpal Randeva) and/or obstetric teams. WISDEM also runs a Preconception Clinic where people with diabetes who are considering starting a family can be offered advice adn help to improve control beforehand.
WISDEM Lead Dr Mike Khan reviews and treats patients with diabetes, hypertension and complex cholesterol problems (lipid disorders and hypercholesterolaemia).
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is an inherited condition that can result in heart attacks and early death. It is common and affects at least 1 in 500 people. Dr Khan and the WISDEM Lipid team are currently looking for around 2,000 individuals around Coventry and Warwickshire who unknowlingly have the condition.
The team has found 300 cases since it began the county-wide 'Cascade Screening' programme in 2011. Once detected the team offers high quality preventative care for new patients with FH, and also identifies affected relatives of known FH patients.
This service reviews and treats patients with complications affecting the kidneys as a results of their diabetes and blood pressure.
This service is provided at WISDEM's Joan Cox Diabetes Centre at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.
WISDEM offers the most recent technology to monitor blood glucose profiles over 72 hours. Results are evaluated on a computer program to look at any unexplained fluctuations. Appropriate advice and treatment are then provided to both paediatric/young persons and adults.
The team comprises Dr Sailesh Sankar, Dr Paul O'Hare, Paula Rose and David Tithecott. This service is one of the longest running digital retinal screening services and is operated by the WISDEM team based at the Joan Cox Diabetes Centre at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. This is a community based retinal screening programme offering ongoing annual screening for early detection of diabetes complications. The service also offers screening in outpatients and a catch-up service in the centre of Coventry.
We are here to support children, young people and their families in Coventry and Rugby with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Our working hours are 09.00 – 17.00 Monday to Friday. All blood tests are by appointment, please book an appointment using the Book Online button below.
If you have an appointment and cannot attend, please remember to cancel or reschedule your appointment so that someone else can use the time slot that you no longer need.
