Human obesity is one of the most important healthcare issues of our age. The obesity epidemic is a global problem that is showing no signs of abating. Within the UK (and Western Europe), the West Midlands has one of the highest rates of obesity. Effective management of obesity requires a multi-disciplinary approach, including input from endocrinologists, dieticians, clinical psychologists and bariatric surgeons.
The WISDEM Centre at UHCW is in possession of this multi-disciplinary expertise to help manage patients with obesity and has recently been awarded Bariatric Centre Status. This service at WISDEM is very active and expanding, consisting of four endocrinologists, two dieticians and dietetic assistants, two bariatric surgeons, a specialist bariatric clinical psychologist, and administrative and support staff.
Referrals to the WISDEM Bariatric Service are received from the local area of Coventry and Warwickshire, but also from other neighbouring counties. As well as specialist input for pre- and post-bariatric surgery (including gastric band insertion, sleeve gastrectomoy and bypass surgery), the service also provides lifestyle management that includes dietary and exercise input in groups sessions, as well as a patient support group.
WISDEM works closely with colleagues in the Primary Care Trusts in Coventry and Warwickshire and recognises the importance of undertaking an integrative approach to obesity between specialist and community services.
